The Archeological Museum of the mid-Odra Region - Świdnica

The Archeological Museum of the mid-Odra Region in Zielona Góra, located in Świdnica is housed in a Renaissance Kietlicz manor erected in 1602.

The manor’s interiors, restored in the 1970s, have preserved a lot of its original Renaissance architectural elements: portals, profiled ceilings with polichrome, the fireplace. The museum’s area of activity is the mid-Odra Region. The institution is a research-development and educational centre. The archeological exhibition ranges from the primaeval history of the region to the modern times. The majority of exhibited archeological relics come from the Museum’s own excavation work. A minor part of its collection comes from accidental findings or has been inherited from German museums. Lovers of the past can admire ceramics and jewellery from various periods of primaeval history as well as specimens of weaponry from Roman and medieval times. The Museum also exhibits relics of the past from pre-Columbian America.

At present (June 2010), there are four permanent exhibitions in the Museum: an educational exhibition devoted to hunters and farmers of the Stone Age in the mid-Odra Region; ‘Wicina – the town of metallurgists from before 2,500 years ago’; The Mid-Odra Region Towards the Close of Antiquity’; The Defence of the Western Borders of the Polish State during of the Rule of the Piast Dynasty’. The building of the museum is surrounded by a beautiful park, where tourists will find peace and quiet. For further details please visit www.muzeum-swidnica.org.
